Question: What do you think are the most important needs in our lives? some people choose video games, food and water, shelter, but i want to know EXACTLY what we need to survive.
To survive, we need: oxygen, so we can produce energy, water for our cells to work, and food to be a fuel source for energy. Then we need shelter and warmth to protect us from the weather. I guess these are all we need to survive. But we also need friends and social interaction, and some kind of purpose in life, and things we enjoy (like video games, the internet). The physical needs come first though.
I have always liked this quotation from the philosopher Bertrand Russel: “The aristocratic rebel, since he has enough to eat, must have other causes of discontent.”
I agree with Ed. I think, actually, that the need for things other than just basic food and shelter is a very important force in human evolution – if people were happy to just accept what they had once they were warm and fed enough we’d still all be living in East Africa, rather than talking to each other over the internet.
Good answers, and a great quote. There are a few dozen chemicals we need to survive, ones that our bodies cannot make on their own from the food we eat. Perhaps the most famous of these vitamin C, which if you don’t eat enough of you get scurvy (and become a pirate!).
I think a general feeling of happiness is one of the most important things you need. I definitely need to feel happy with where I am going in life and with what I and doing and things like that.
