Question: is there anyone else in the past (famous) that has worked on evolution and created a theory, such as Darwin and his theory.. this may be a stupid question im sorry but i just want to type in some other stuff to read over evolution.
Loads of scientists have worked on evolution, although none as famous as Darwin. To my mind, the most famous after Darwin are Ronald Fisher, JBS Haldane, and George Williams, although these guys are not household names. But there are literally thousands of evolutionary scientists today.
Before Darwin, several people came up with the idea that living things had changed over time. A very early one was Anaximander, the Greek philosopher. Another was Lamarcke, a French scientist. But these guys didn’t have a plausible mechanism through which the change could happen. That’s what Darwin provided so well.
Ed and Sam are right. In the very recent past, I’d like to add Steven Jay Gould (who died 5 years ago). Along with colleagues, he was really important for the realization that evolution can only be understood if the development of organisms is also considered. After all everything has to develop into what it is…
Alfred Russel Wallace – His paper was read at the same time as Darwin’s to the Linnean Society, in London. They were formulated on pretty much the same theses, but his was formulated from the insect world, not the birds and mammalia, as Darwin’s was.
