• Question: I understand that some birds can repeat what we say if repeated often enough. Does this count for budgies?

Some birds are just excellent mimics, I do not think they know what they are saying! Birds that can do this, like parrots, live in big social groups and have a lot of vocal interaction, and think talking to humans is just their way of having that social interaction with their group.

Some birds are such good mimics they can mimic the sound of a camera being pressed, or a car going past!

Steven is right. And budgies can say things, too, but I hear it is very hard to train them!

One theory for why birds can do this is because female birds like male birds with a large number of different songs, who can keep making different noises. The way birds learn different noises is by copying them, so this is why some birds have evolved to be excellent mimics.
