All mammals give birth to live young like humans. After fertilization, the embryo grows inside the mother’s womb, and then the time comes she gives birth through her vagina. Some animals seem to feel some pain – they grunt a bit. But human birth is much more difficult and probably painful because the human head is so big, and because human hips are much narrower because we walk upright, which means there is less room for the baby to get out.

Many other animals don’t give birth, they lay eggs which then develop outside her body. And some animals called marsupials (like kangaroos) give birth when the baby is very tiny. It then crawls up her tummy into her pouch, attached to a teat and grows bigger there.
