I have to wear scrubs when we are working on dissections in the lab, but in the office I just wear jeans!

Usually no- we can be as neat or as scruffy as we like! If you work in labs you might have to wear a lab coat and in the aviary with the birds you might sometimes have to wear a mask to protect your lungs from all the dust in the birds’ bedding!

I wear a lab coat in the lab to protect my skin and clothes from certain chemicals. When I’m doing fieldwork I might be wearing a wet suit and a snorkel (I get beasties from the sea to look at) or I might be wearing a hard hat and hiking boots (If I’m fossil hunting). Other than that- I can wear what I like…….within reason- I’m sure If i turned up to work dressed as a Christmas tree people would have something to say 😉

There is no practical rule in my lab except the one big rule “No open toe shoes”. Which can be rough especially after a pedi on Summer days but you see the point is to save your toes from potentially harmful spills etc. If I will do a nasty experiment I will wear lab coat to protect my clothes but since I am working in a molecular biology lab the experiments are usually pretty neat themselves. I know people who work with rat and human tissues and stuff have more strict rules though.

Hi Tawny, in the lab we have to wear white lab coats (just like in movies…) and latex gloves. Apart from that I wear what ‘normal’ people do to work.
