Alexander Flemming – he discovered penicillin, which is the antibiotic that helps us get better when we have infections. Penicillin is so widely used around the world, I couldn’t even begin to imagine what we’d do without it! There would be more sick people for sure!
Marie Curie, she was the first woman to get a Nobel prize and is still the only person to have got a Nobel prize in two fields. She sadly died due to the radiation she had come into contact with during her research.
Richard Feynman. He was a Nobel prize winning theoretical physicist with an absolutely brilliant mind, who revolutionised the way we do calculations and understand quantum physics. He also wrote very amusing books on his personal experiences, he always challenged authority and the accepted wisdom when he thought that they might be wrong. He discovered why the Challenger blew up (and he wasn’t and experimentalist). He was also an amazing teacher, some of his lectures were filmed live and are just fascinating to watch.
For me he’s not not just my favourite scientist he’s a hero – I’ve always tried to emulate him in every way.
