Good question! One exciting technology that a lot of people are working very hard on is something called resistive random access memory (RRAM for short) which is likely to be a replacement for flash memory (memory sticks). RRAM is faster than other types of RAM and needs a lower voltage than flash memory, so companies are starting to develop it.
One company, Crossbar, produced a RRAM chip about the size of a postage stamp which could hold 1 terabyte of data! They say they will start large-scale production next year.
