      Thought experiments (Gedankenexperiment as Einstein called it). For example, I might try to imagine what might be a way to find evidence for the existence of some new particle (that may or may not exist). So I say suppose the Y particle existed, how would I see it. If I come up with something sensible I suggest to an experimentalist colleague and if he thinks it’s sensible too he tries it.
      But, as I said in another answer, I’m a theorist so I don’t do laboratory experiments.
