• Question: Did you always want to have this job, or did you have different ambitions when you were younger?

      I wanted to be a veterinarian and also a marine biologist. You can see a biological theme to these choices. Turns out I was better at maths than biology, so I chose an area that uses maths (my skill), biology (my subject interest) and helping people and animals (through reducing disease risks). Looked at that way – it was an inevitable choice for me.

      Hi,
      I didn’t always want to do this job. In fact, I didn’t really know it existed as a possible job to do until after I finished my degree when I was around 21 or 22 years old!

      When I was a lot younger I wanted to be an astronaut (space! yay!) or a paleontologist (dinosaur fossils! yay!) Then when I was in secondary school I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I think that is one of the reasons I went to university, to give myself longer to decide what job to do!

      No, I didn’t always want to be a doctor, but I did want to do something with biology and genetics and also working with lots of people. Once I got my medical degree, for a while I wanted to be an emergency department doctor as the work was really exciting, but I also liked treating patients with infections and I ended up settling on microbiology.
