It is a lot of fun being an Environmental Scientist. The work you do can take you to some of the most interesting parts of the world, and have you working with a range of interesting people. As most companies need environment staff, and environment work can often be focused on supporting engineering projects, you get involved in some very challenging but interesting projects. That’s just in industry! If you go down the route of academia and research there is a huge variety in what you can specialise in. You could become an ecotoxicologist and focus on how chemical affect living things, you could specialise in atmospheric science and look at how the wind patterns move in the air, or you could specialise in sustainable motorsport and look at the systems being used in racing cars. Environmental science is the most open science, as everything has some interaction with the environment, so there is a huge range of things to investigate and discover!
As I spent nearly three years living continuously in the Antarctic, I can definitely say yes, it can be fun and exciting. When I was working in the ‘field’ that is to say, away from base, we were camping out for periods of up to 6 weeks at temperatures of -28C. Our working involved travelling over crevasse fields and sea ice
I really enjoyed my Environmental Science degree, I learned so much, and made great friends. We had some super field trips to places like the Cairngorms, Forth Valley, and Spain. Now I am working as an Environment Ranger I am very happy to have a job where I can climb trees to check eagle nests, build wildcat dens, monitor badger setts, and restore rare habitats!
