      Very nice question. Basically two things happen, either we slow down or we have to stop. The problem is that we are able to bypass the mechanisms in the brain that regulate this and this is where problems can occur:

      So in the clip I sent you to the link to you can see what happens when we bypass the signals that cause us to stop or slow down. They have been overridden and so we end up getting into this situation. Pacing is designed to try and prevent this from happening.
