Speaking is quite a complicated thing so I will do my best to try and explain. You know when you blow air out of your mouth? This is the same air that makes a noise when you speak. That air is coming from your lungs and as it passes your throat, you can make a noise! This is because you have a special bit in your throat called your ‘voice box’ and this is where you have little flaps called vocal cords. These two vocal cords can move to make different shapes and this affects the noise of the air when it swooshes past them. When they are long and tight you can make high-pitched noises and when they are short and loose you can make lower sounds. Once the air gets up into your mouth you can change the sounds again by changing the shapes of your lips and tongue and that’s how speech is made! I hope that made sense?
