Hiccups happen when the diaphragm muscle contracts unexpectedly, pulling air quickly into your lungs, and your voice box closes. It’s the snapping-shut of the voice box which makes the hiccup sound. Hiccups are caused by a lot of different things, though they usually occur when the diaphragm gets irritated.
