There are two ways in which trees grow: 1) Cambium, a layer of cells found under the bark, divides. This causes the trunk and branches to expand. This also results in growth rings inside the trees. 2) Cells at the tips of saplings an twigs divide, making the tree grow length-wise (branches get longer).
