Really difficult to say! If I had to pick, I would have to pick two different places. First, I travelled to Australia for work (to use a telescope there), and while I was there I went hiking in a place called the Blue Mountains near Sydney. The scenery and the weather (and the animals!) there were amazing.
Other than that, I’d say Easter Island where I went on holiday last year with my girlfriend. Going to this island so far away from everything else and seeing all of the history of the people there. How they carved these huge statues out of rock as a tribute to their ancestors and/or their gods. It was incredible!
If you like to travel then doing science is a great way to see the world. I’ve been to loads of amazing places, each one has its own good points. For science-related trips I’ve been to India, Taiwan, USA, Canada and all over Europe. I really enjoyed living in Geneva, Switzerland as it meant I could be based at the CERN laboratory, home to the Large Hadron Collider. It’s a beautiful area to live in and I used to love being so close to amazing hiking routes in the Alps.
For non-work related trips, I was recently in Thailand with my wife. The food was fantastic. 🙂
Last summer, I went to Les Houches, in the French Alps, at the foot of Mont Blanc, for a summer school on cosmology. It was absolutely amazing. It’s really like a hidden place in the middle of the Alps, which nothing to do except a LOT of physics with many world experts, and a LOT of hiking and outdoor activities. Obviously I brought my bike along, and I biked up many epic passes! I even biked to see the Tour de France passing nearby! (I’m a big biking fan, so it was definitely one of the highlights of my stay!)
I mean, China, Australia, Malaysia, Paraguay, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, US, are all pretty amazing too! 😛
I really loved going to 2 places –
1) the Eden Project. This place is AMAZING and I really recommend going there! It has got a number of different “climates”, and is essentially a small sample of a number of different places in the world! I loved the rainforest part – standing next to real rainforest trees – my goodness they are tall!
2) The Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw, Poland. It. Is. Massive! And the number of hands-on demos is fantastic!!!! I could quite easily spend a week locked in that place! It had a massive bubble machine. BUBBLES!!!
So yeh, they are sciencey, but that’s what I find interesting. And the questions that you hear people asking are always very good 🙂
