There is always more to learn!
I used to find that quite daunting, but now I love that I can always learn cool new stuff or learn to use new machines.

Remembering the basics! I often completely forget about key concepts and foundations of chemistry. Often the answer isn’t as complex as you think it will be!

Taking a little bit of extra time to think out ideas before trying them out in the lab. Often we get requests and the best way to see if they work is to try them out. More often, spending a little time thinking about what it is we are trying makes all the difference in the long run.

Honestly? My biggest problem with how I work at the moment is that I get so excited about the chemistry and the experiment planning that I forget to write up what I’ve found until ages after!

So I’m trying to put together something which makes sense from scraps of paper or notes scrawled across 3 different notebooks which I haven’t looked at for weeks. I really need to work on that!

I think for me it is to find a balance between being in the lab doing experiments and being in the office writing articles about my work so it can be shared with other scientists. I get very excited about doing new experiments in the lab…
