Often when we try to do new things they don’t work the first time… or the second… or the third..
Sometimes it is quite annoying! It takes a lot of perseverance but it makes it worthwhile in the end!
To be honest the worst thing, I have found, about science is how competitive it can be. So many researchers are chasing down the same goal and the best way to get to answers would be to collaborate, all together. However, to get the funding and the renown scientists need to keep their work very secret, which can slow us down as a group.
There are a lot of cases, as well, of people not ever publishing the dangers or failures of their processes, again in the name of keeping their work secret or keeping their shortcomings out of the spotlight. So other scientists will try out the process (as we are encouraged to do when a new finding is published) but because only the good sides were ever published it fails, or in really bad cases there can be explosions or toxic byproducts formed.
