My work has a lot of hazards, both for me and the people around me. So there are lots of measures and rules in place which help me stay safe. For example I have to wear a lab coat to stop me getting chemicals on me, I need to wear goggles to protect my eyes, I need to work in a “Fume Hood” which takes away any particularly nasty chemicals which I might breath in, If I’m going out onto the Plant where the big scale reactors are I need to wear high visibility jacket, a hard hat and special shoes.
So basically, my work is not a safe environment on its own, so we have to make it safe with how we all behave in the lab!
We handle lots of corrosive or harmful chemicals on our site and this can range from a 200 ml bottle to a 20,000 ltr holding tank. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is always worn which is a lab coat, goggles, safety boots, high visibility jackets and a helmet it we are outside on our plant.
We have a safety board outside our entrance which tracks the number of days without a lost time injury. A couple of years ago, every employee received a gift from the company as we managed to reach 1000 days!
