I had to work quite hard, but I enjoyed the work I was doing so I didn’t mind.

For me the hardest part of my education was my A-levels, not my degree! I am not very good at sitting still and concentrating for long periods of time. I also hadn’t worked out the best way for me to study so I found revising for exams very tough. When I got to university my teachers realised that I was dyslexic and I was able to learn how to study in a way that made much more sense for me!
I found that making recordings of the information on my phone and listening to it on my walk to university was a good way to learn.

Studying a science degree is a full time coarse with 20 – 30 hours of lectures or lab time per week but it is really engaging stuff and you get to meet lots of like minded people just like you. I met my lab partner in week 1 of first year and we are still good friends 10 years on. There is always free time to socialise, play a sport or just relax but you will get used to a 9 – 5 style day (there are breaks so don’t worry!)

I’m actually relatively early on in my career! I’ve only been in a Full-Time Chemistry professional role for 2 years. To get here, though, I had to do 6 years of university. This included some Chemical Engineering and a Year of work experience in a Bionanotechnology lab, which is also where I did my Masters’ project.

Hi Phoebe! I had to work quite hard to arrive where I am now but I guess anyone in research needs to keep working hard all the time. It can be stressful but it can also be really rewarding!
