      Hello gt111, bonkers and vidic96! 🙂

I like to study fish because…..

      1. Fish – and crayfish, which are actually crustaceans – live in nice places! Which means I get to work in nice places! I love working outside and I get to travel to rivers, lakes and ponds all over the country. If the weather’s good, it’s even more fun! I actually get a tan sometimes (in Scotland!!!). Here’s Loch Croispol (home of a population of white clawed crayfish: and Loch Ken (full of American signal crayfish!): pretty nice eh?

      2. Fish are interesting. They’ve been living on earth a very long time – millions of years, longer than the dinosaurs – and there are many different species! Many species are incredibly adapted to their environment…. the four-eyed fish for example, has eyes that let it see out of the water and underwater at the same time, so it can look out for predators and food! Flying fish have ‘wings’ that let them jump out of the water and glide away from predators. Mudskippers are fish that can survive on land (check them out on youtube, they’re so odd looking!). Sharks (which are also classed as fish!) are some of the most deadly predators in the world. Many fish are beautiful to look at… I went snorkelling over coral reef once and was amazed by all the different coloured and shaped fish! Crayfish are not fish… although they live alongside fish. Crayfish are really interesting to study too – they can survive out of water and walk on land… and many species can live through extreme conditions, like freezing.

      So there we go! 🙂
