      Do you mean when the eyes look red? It’s because when the flash goes into your eye some of it bounces off and comes back out. The red you see is because of the blood in the tiny blood vessels at the back of the eye. Red eye normally only happens when the flash is straight ahead of the person in the photo. If the person turns their head a bit the light doesn’t go straight into the eye, so it doesn’t look red.
