I like using lots of different things really! oscilloscopes, waveform generators, signal processing units and amplifiers, they’re all really cool!
I think my very favourite is the Bond-impact tester, which smashes rocks with sledgehammers, I will upload some pictures of it to my profile page soon!
I really like pipetting, for some reason! And I like my good old atomic absorption spectrometer that still runs on MS-DOS (that was before Windows was invented), has no printed attached, basically just white letters on a black screen. But it absolutely reliable (touch wood…) and produces great results.
I have endless fun with our thermal-imaging camera. It shows the temperature of things. You can see which parts of your body generate the most heat and measure the surface temperature of a load of random things. This technology can also be used for night-vision!
I’ve recently started some new experiments which mean I get to use an instrument called a Kappa Bridge. With it I can find out what magentic minerals are inside my rock. I can heat my samples up to really high temperatures ( above 700 degrees celsius) and also cool them down to really low temperatures, 192 Kelvin! To do that, I’ve got to use liquid nitrogen and I enjoy using it, its good fun.
