For buildings you need a hard, durable rock that doesn’t wear away too easily. I’ve seen buildings made out of all types of cool rocks.
The same goes for other types of constructions as well, roads, pavements etc… you want something that can support wear and tare! Granites are a good choice, as are polished limestones and I’ve also seen basalts and sandstones.
If you are going to use a rock to be decorative, like in a statue or on your kitchen worktop, you want it to be pretty but strong at the same time, so marble is very common.
Plus, you need to think about how much it might cost! You might choose something not as pretty because it is quarried very close to where you live and so it’ll cost you less to transport it.
