Mostly for historical reasons. William Willett campaigned to introduce Daylight Savings Time (DST) in the early 1900s. He wanted to see more daylight in the evenings, which would also save the country a lot of money in lighting costs. The outbreak of the First World War made the issue more important because of the need to save coal, and so DST was finally introduced in Britain on 17 May 1916. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time#History
The time the sunrises and sets changes throughout the year because the spins on a tilt compared to the sun. So if we didn’t change the hours, then the change in how long it stayed light in the evenings would be more dramatic. But like Hannah said, the reason to change the hours is just something made up by the government. Not everyone agrees, because depending on how far up the country you live, changing the hours might make it really dark in the mornings for you.
