Question: how do all of your jobs effect the community around you and how does the type of science you study effect the rest of the world from its discoveries.
My astronomy department is very well integrated into the local community. We have exhibitions at Tate Liverpool every year and we’re always giving public talks (in pubs and museums for example). This year we’re also taking part in the Bluedot music festival!
My science may not directly effect the rest of the world, but I hope by communicating the work I do, I can inspire others to get excited by and interested in science.
I suppose my job benefits the community by providing safe, effective sonographers and radiographers. I’ve taught so many sonographers now that if you have had a scan in the south east / London you might have been scanned by one of my ex-students.
In my role with the professional body I’m working with others to look at how we can train more people, so hopefully there will be enough health care professionals to look after me in my old age & you and your family as you need it.
My research has been into ways to teach people how to scan, to reduce the chance of injury. I’ve had some work published in America recently and done a podcast for their journal, so hopefully more people will be able to improve the way they scan to reduce the risk of injury. That would mean more people scanning and for longer, so win win.
In our lab we work on lots of different ways of helping the body repair itself, and some of those are now being tested in hospitals and will hopefully help people with different conditions and injuries.
