Afraid that’s why its called Dark Matter – we don’t know what it is and we don’t know how to detect it. I imagine there will be a breakthrough in this within the next 100 years as it is a big challenge. If we can understand it better, it will help us to refine our models for the formation, expansion and possible contraction of the universe – pretty fundamental stuff!

The best answer I can come up with for this is “Nobody Knows!”
We just haven’t learnt enough about it yet. Hopefully this will develop eventually, however until someone comes up with that “eureka” moment then we won’t have significant developments.

No-one really understands Dark Matter. It makes up 80% of the universe although we can not directly observe it. That statistic really brings home how much more there is out there to explore and discover new things from but also how much we have found from a relatively small section of the universe!
