Some people have a very high tolerance for alcohol because they are good at making the enzyme which breaks down alcohol. The gene which makes this enzyme is sometimes called the “party gene” – because it can make the owner drink lots of alcohol without getting drunk quickly.
However, at 22 units per day though, you probably wouldn’t last very long, but it would depend on which genes you had – and also your lifestyle/environment.
Hi, there are two main enzymes in the body which are responsible for the metabolism (break down) of alcohol, these are called alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase. Genetic differences between people in theses 2 enzymes can dramatically alter how people can handle alcohol, so overall the answer to your question depends on the individual. The daily recommended limits for alcohol are 3-4units a day for men and 2-3units per day for women (maximum and assuming you are over 18). 22 units would be like drinking 11 glasses of wine or bottles of beer and if you take me for example, this would probably kill me in a day (as you can guess from this I do not handle alcohol well at all). However for some alcoholic individuals this might be what they consume every day. Eventually drinking this amount of alcohol on a daily basis will cause permanent liver damage in anyone though.
Hope this helps
