Yeh definitely, biology was my favourite by far but chemistry and physics were good too. Chemistry I’m pretty bad at.

We had one biology teacher who was just really old fashioned and always wanted to do stuff about plants when we were always wanting to know about viruses and proteins, but then i guess in all subjects there’s bits you like and bits you don’t. It’s being able to learn and get your brain thinking about the stuff you don’t like, that really gets you better and better at a subject I reckon.

I’ve always liked the fact in all the sciences there’s sitting-down-learning-and-thinking stuff and then there’s the working-in-the-lab-practical stuff. There’s not really any other subject that use so much thinking and practical skill together. That’s something I still like about my job now – the really good variety in my work from learning special skills in the lab to staring at a bit of data for hours trying to work out what it means and then usually going back into the lab to prove it! The link between practical work and learning work becomes closer and closer as you go from school to a degree and a PhD.

I actually enjoyed most subjects at school (apart from French). I chose to do science A levels (Maths, Chemistry and Biology) and I really didn’t enjoy chemistry – I only got a D in the exam. I enjoyed biology though and thats why I chose to carry on with science at University. I only became really interested in science, enough to do it as my job, in my third year of University. I found studying science at school was completely different from University, I hadn’t realised there were so many different areas of science untill I left school. This type of interactive learning wasn’t around when I was at school and I think it will really help people to see all the different possibilities.

Yes. I liked orbitals in Chemistry, and Van der Waals forces. Hund’s Law, Hess’s Rule, Markovnikov’s rule. A good friend used to take the mikey out of me all the time for being interested in those things.

Yes I did especially the practical classes when I got to plan and do experiments. I prefered biology and chemistry because I always thought physics was a bit dull but thinking about it now I think it was probably because my physics teachers were a bit dull! I think biology was my absolute favourite because it helped me to make sense of the world around me and to understand more about problems that I was interested in, such as conservation, endangered species, health and the environment.

Mostly yes, I was lucky to have good science teachers most of the time. I think you must have at least one good science teacher too, because he/she has got you involved with this “I’m a Scientist” project which hopefully will help you to enjoy science more too.
