I agree with the cost, but we always try to find ways to do things as cheaply as possible. In our lab we will start by generating very solid hypotheses (a proposed idea as to why something is occurring to/in the bacteria) using computers, before testing it in the lab. This way you spend less money on lab equipment.
This all was turned upside down when we had to spend £20,000 between January and April, as otherwise we would have lost it due to the end of the financial year! Suddenly we could spend more than usual, but everything had been set up to do cheaply! Science money is funny money.
