Illegal drugs are just not good for your body- there are countless side effects, and the damage can be long lasting! Iv seen people use illegal drugs and then suffer with shaking for the rest of their lives, just like Parkinson’s disease! Illegal drugs are illegal because they are dangerous!!! Very dangerous

      Hi dauntlesscake,

Do you mean illegal drugs (aka Lance Armstrong), or illegal drugs as in heroin etc?

Cheats (those who take fairly harmless drugs to artificially boost their prowess) are deluding themselves and others. Sometimes they can hurt themselves (eg if they take too many steroids). Sometimes they can kill themselves (as in the Tour de France). But it is not as bad as all that, I suppose. But I have much more respect for people who do it the hard way ie by ability, mental stamina and plain hard work.

The other sort of drug? Well, this too is confusing. In the past, some drugs that we now consider to be bad were commonly used, even for children. People became addicted. And perhaps that is the answer. A drug that locks you in to it (ie you become addicted to it) – well, it kind of denies your humanity. By this I mean that once you’ve become addicted you are not the same person you once were. And that’s why I also think that people who overcome their addiction are brave and strong. But not as clever as the people who didn’t take the drug and become addicted in the first place.

Illegal drugs get their status because of the harm that they can do to an individual, society, or both.

In my opinion although preventing people from taking drugs that will do them harm is a good thing, experiments that investigate whether illegal drugs can treat diseases – such as MDMA for treating post-traumatic stress disorder – should be allowed as there are a very small percentage of people that might benefit from them. These experiments are carried out by trained researchers only and strictly controlled.

In short, unless it’s prescribed by a doctor, or available from your pharmacy, you shouldn’t take it. For one you can never be sure what exactly it is you are taking! And these drugs can do serious harm and be addictive if abused.
