      Hi Ellie,

I think I enjoyed it most of the time, though not always. I guess everyone has teachers they don’t get on with, or topics that don’t interest them. Doing research at university involves more creativity than following a protocol at school, so I definitely enjoy that more than some of our school experiments.

I remember it bothered me a lot when we had to follow a protocol which didn’t work for some reason. For example, one day we were trying to measure how fast woodlice breathe at different temperatures by looking at how many bubbles of carbon dioxide they produced, but then they were using up oxygen at the same time, and air expands anyway as the temperature increases! So I found that quite frustrating.

I didn’t even enjoy lectures that much at university, I prefer a two-way conversation where I can pick things up at my own pace. Luckily that hasn’t stopped me having a successful research career!

      Best wishes,
      Sarah
