Quite a few people I know have died from cancer, but that isn’t why I chose to work on it originally. I knew I wanted to work on a disease that was devastating to millions of families across the world, and I find the biology of cancer interesting. But it is nice to have a personal connection to your work.
Hi Harrison, I have an aunt who died of cancer when I was very young. She left behind my two cousins whose growing up was very difficult without their mum. But I have worked on cancer because it is a major health problem and I am convinced that if we get to understand it, we will find ways to prevent a lot of it. The best example is smoking, there is a direct link with lung cancer and the campaigns to help people stop smoking have a made a huge difference. I hope that through the research, we will find more preventable causes of cancer so that the disease can be avoided altogether.
