We need sleep to be able to recover from all the impulses and activities that we had while we were awake. Without sleep humans (and all other animals) cannot function. While we can forgo sleep for longer periods of time, eventually we will need it or our bodies will stop to function. We need on average 4 hours to keep our body functioning.

We sleep to give our body a rest and some time to recuperate energy for the next day. Scientists have shown we should sleep for 6 to 7 and a half hours to get the most of our brain when we are awake.
