Pain is there to send a signal to your brain that you are injured, but the main reasons why you may not feel pain immediately has to do with survival instincts. Sometimes it is best, for instance when you have been in an accident, not to feel pain so you can get yourself out of a dangerous situation. In this case adrenalin in your body effects your perception of pain. You only start feeling it after you calm down.
Now you are probably wondering why this happens with quite small injuries as well. I believe your body takes a couple of seconds to assess whether you are in danger of whether you should tend to your injury. If you are not in danger you will get pain pretty much immediately. Pretty cool, if you think about it, as your body decides what you should prioritise.
