The planets got their names from the Roman gods, because the Greeks and Romans were the first to name the planets they could see by eye: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The Romans named the planets by how they looked, which is why Mars, which is red and therefore looks a bit hot-tempered, got given the name of the war-god!
After being named by the Romans, the astronomers who came after them and discovered other planets kept the same system, which is how we got Neptune, Uranus, and (for a little bit) Pluto.
