Unless evolution gives us fur or something similar, we will need some form of clothing to protect us for the weather. Humans are not very well adjusted to cope with heat or cold without a layer of protection.

Lewis Gordon Pugh broke a few world records by swimming in the arctic while only wearing speedos! -> http://www.ted.com/talks/lewis_pugh_swims_the_north_pole.html

Likewise, Inuits (Eskimos) bodies have adapted to send more blood to areas of the body that are exposed. So we can possibly adapt to cold weather to some extent.

But how different do you think society would be if everyone was naked all the time? Clothes are a part of our identity. We wear suits and skirts when we go to work, uniforms in school and we go shopping to choose our own casual clothes. Probably not what you were asking, but its an interesting side point.

When we started out, we probably had a lot less to wear and in some cultures today people don’t wear much of anything at all, but they are usually in places where weather is less of an issue than it is here. But I think Phil is talking about an interesting point, clothes do a lot more than protecting us from the elements today. They are all about expressing our identities and they also show how and where we fit in with society. In some indigenous tribes, clothes or jewellery are also used to display your state in the cultural hierarchy. This is also used on police or military uniforms here. So clothes are a lot more than they seem on the surface and it would be interesting to see what happened to our culture and society if they were to go!
