Some people are more prone to get addicted to things and are said to have addictive personalities. Scientists believe there are 3 traits that contribute to addictive personalities: sensation-seeking, impulsivity and compulsivity.
Sensation-seeking is the tendency to seek out new experiences, like traveling to new countries, trying new foods or going bungee jumping.
Impulsivity is failing to consider the consequence of your actions and is similar to having poor self control like eating an entire cake when you should only have a slice.
Compulsivity is when you continue to do something even though there are negative repercussions. A good example of this is people with OCD who need to check that the door is locked multiple times, even if it means travelling back from work. These compulsions are kind of like bad habits and some people form these habits more easily than others.
Scientists have used instruments like MRI scanners to show that different areas of the brain are linked to these traits but exactly what causes them isn’t well known, like a lot of our brains.
Daren’s answer is much better than I could give but people generally want to fit in with one another and so tend to follow what people they respect are doing. So if a famous celebrity starts wearing a loom band and their fans want to be like them, then an easy way is to go out and get a loom band for themselves! I’ve never been someone to follow trends like this – I like to be different!
