Darkness is just when no light is hitting the back of your eye. So when you close your eyes, you cut out a lot of the light from entering but if you are not sleeping in a dark place, some of it will still get through your eyelids.

We perceive that we are experience darkness as we are blocking out the light. It’s no different from covering your eyes with your hands.
