Doing something I find exciting and interesting while knowing that it’s applications could go on to help develop new drugs that could treat people all over the world. 😀

Knowing that what I find out might some time in the future make a difference to the world.
I also really love teaching people – I have to help teach undergraduate students sometimes and it’s a great feeling when they start off not understanding something and when you’ve explained how it works they go away having understood it.

The most rewarding thing about my job is when I’ve taught a student how to solve a crystal structure. The look on the face of a person when they first see a three-dimensional picture of what they’ve made appearing in front of them (and they are the first person in the world ever to see it) is difficult to beat! And I know I’ve done a good job when they reach the point when they really feel like they understand what they are doing!
