There are several ways that robotics can be helpful in medicine. One is in the automation of the drug making part which can speed things up, reduce cost and increase the quantities which are being made. The second is to help doctors and surgeons – if we can make robots which are very well controlled with small movements, they could remove some of the human error. I think in the future, robots will be a big part of our lives not just in medicine but we still need to improve the technology.

We use robots pretty much everyday in drug discovery, they are great for handling small volumes of liquids. They can dispense these more quickly, more accurately and with less error than we can. It also frees up our time to analyse data and plan experiments, or have a coffee.

Robots are very useful at diamond light source too. The robots there are the same as those used to build cars! We use them to load samples of crystals so we can fire X-rays at them. Without the robots we would have to keep going into the hutch and changing samples which would take much much longer.
