None of my family ever had any interest in science. My dad still likes to tell people all about how he doesn’t know where I’ve got it from and they must have swapped me at the hospital (haha, very funny dad).
But my parents are really supportive of me and would have encouraged me to do anything at all if it was really what I wanted to do!

I was the first person in my family to go to university and get a PhD so my family couldn’t really advise me on being a scientist but of course they encouraged me to do something that they could tell I was passionate about.

I think if my parents had tried to encourage me to become a scientist I would have become the opposite! My family were really supportive though and let me follow my own interests. My Dad was useless at science but my mum was an engineer so I think she must have helped support my interest. My brother has no real interest in science though so my family are split down the middle!

My Art teacher at school encouraged me to continue my education. None of my family had been to University, so it was difficult to discuss such things. I am glad that I listened to the advice.
