• Question: Is it actually dangerous to look directly at the sun, because I can stare at the sun for a while without hurting my eyes.

      The sun is a very bright object and if you stare at it for too long, it can damage the back of your eye, called the retina. Once you’ve damaged it (kind of like burning it out), you can’t recover it as it is very sensitive. So yes it is dangerous to look directly at the sun so please avoid doing it!

      Like Lynne said, if you stare at the sun it can cause damage to your eyes that is effectively like sunburn and can cause serious and permanent damage. This is why it is important when studying things like solar eclipses it is important not to stare directly at it but to use special glasses or cameras.
