Hopefully my work will mean that we have some new materials that do interesting things in the technology in your pocket or for computers or even something like making colour changing paint for your car! We are trying to make things that we can turn on and off by heating and cooling or shining light on them or by applying an electric current across them or even by squeezing them. New technology has been driven by the discoveries of new materials and so we need to keep doing that if we are going to continue to develop new devices. We also look at ways to improve how well medicines in the form of tablets dissolve in your blood and that can make things more effective medicines. Or to make materials that can trap medicine molecules inside them until we shine light on them for instance to open them up and release them to the right part of your body!

Hopefully my research will lead to the discovery of new drugs for treating bacterial infections. Without these drugs we wouldn’t be able to treat infections and things like simple operations might not be possible. Hopefully you won’t get sick and need antibiotics but if you are unfortunate enough to get a bacterial infection then you’ll be glad that there are effective antibiotics which can treat you so you can live a happy, healthy life.

Hopefully my work will lead to ways to reduce global warming – either by reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere or by providing an alternative to petrol cars. This will make the environment a much better place for you in the future!
