The most expensive part of making MOFs is all the reactions that you do that don’t work that eat up all your chemicals and you don’t get anything out at the end.
Most of my starting materials cost somewhere between £1 and £5 per gram and I often do reactions on about 5g of material every day. Then there’s the cost of everything else that goes in the reaction and all the equipment we use to analyse them. I can’t actually give you a number but it probably takes at least £1000 for a new MOF discovered. Once they’ve been discovered we work out ways to make them in better ways so that they take up less resources!
