I did my degree in Natural Sciences, which meant a three year degree course, with Maths, Physics, Geology and Materials Science in the first year. I progressively specialised in Geology and Earth Sciences by the time I graduated in my third year. After that I did another degree, a three year research project (PhD) where I studied the properties of minerals at high temperatures, similar to those in the volcanoes where the minerals form.

My undergraduate degree was a Masters in Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Glasgow. This took 5 years including a year working in industry. Following this I studied for a PhD in structure-based drug design at the Institute of Cancer Research which took 4 years in total.

I studied Chemical Physics at the University of Edinburgh. I studied Chemical Physics as I liked both Chemistry and Physics at school and it meant I didn’t have to decide which one to choose! As part of this I did an Industrial Placement year which allowed me to go and work at the ISIS neutron facility in Oxfordshire and gave me a year off from exams and I got paid! It also influenced my choices after I finished my degree. It took me 4 years to do but normally it is 5 years in Scotland, I just went straight into the second year with my A Level results.
After that I went on to do a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. This was 3 years spent studying the way that X-rays and neutrons can be used to look at the arrangement of molecules in crystals. The idea was to relate this information to the properties of the crystals.

I studied Chemistry with a year abroad at Durham University. It took me four years and most of the fourth year was spent in Germany, which was a lot of hard work but at weekends it was like a 6 month holiday. We went everywhere! I’m still doing my PhD and have just got to the end of the second year. I’ve got one more year of being paid and then I’ll have to write a large report, more like a book, about what I’ve done. That’ll probably take at least 6 months, so it’s probably going to be nearly 2 more years until I get a real job!
