The muscles and bones that make up your body are linked in some of the most curious ways. If you were to damage your knee caps or bash your behind, you will soon feel the knock-on effects on your locomotor ability…basically, it would be tough to walk. So in a word, ‘YES’ they are necessary 🙂

Without kneecaps we wouldn’t be able to bend our legs as much so walking and running would be more difficult. Some more basic animals don’t have kneecaps and their tendons attach the top of their leg straight to the bottom, whereas we have kneecaps as a kind of midway point!
I think sitting down would be quite uncomfortable without a nice cushioned behind!

I think if they weren’t necessary, we would have evolved differently! I certainly can’t imagine not being able to bend down at the knees and it would be very tiring if we had to stand up all day if we didn’t have a cushioned behind to sit on!

I couldn’t play football without kneecaps and I couldn’t take a seat on the bench afterwards without my behind, so I think they are necessary. We evolved to have kneecaps and behinds as they gave us an advantage our ancestors which didn’t have them, so they must be important.

certainly necessary for me. Maybe not for an earthworm?
