      Trick of the light. Heightened senses. Moody atmosphere. Even the expectation you might see one (for example if you visited a ‘haunted’ house). Of course, there is the other consideration: they do exist.

      Ghosts are not something science can prove at the moment, so we can’t. But our science is not perfect and maybe one day we can answer this question!
