Question: is it possible for our universe to alter in any way?

What do you mean by alter? If you are talking about general changes, the universe is constantly expanding. This means galaxies/stars are further from us every day, and the universe is a little colder. This expansion may keep growing faster forever, slow to a stop, or even reverse! In the first case the universe will be literally ripped apart. In the second case the universe will crawl to a heat death. In the third case the universe will collapse into a Big Crunch which is another Big Bang.
