Arthritis is a disease in which the cartilage in your joints starts to break down and becomes worn away.

The Cartilage is like the body’s suspension – it is a gooey jelly-like substance that covers the bones around the joints, and acts like a shock absorber.

When the cartilage breaks down, the bones in the joins rub together and grate – this causes lots of pain and makes movement very difficult.
Cartilage breaks down because our bodies are not very good at repairing it – over time, as we get older, it just wears down – which means that a lot of elderly people tend to get arthritis. People can also get arthritis after sports injuries or joint infections.
