I think that people who go to university to party and not go to lectures are silly as you pay all that money to learn and then not get the benefit from it (they will also be the ones trying to encourage you to do the same too!). But saying that I strongly believe in the phrase ‘work hard and play hard’. If you don’t enjoy a social life then university can really get you down. I think one of the most important things about going to university is becoming an independent person. As for the first time in your life you make all the decision and your parents or teachers aren’t running around after you telling you off so that you will work. You have to look after yourself and your work (from making sure there is milk in the fridge to getting an essay handed in on time). The hardest lesson to learn is if you don’t do it….nobody else will for you! So you have to find your own work-life balance and this can vary depending on the time of year and the workload you have. For example I used to go out socialising a lot more in my 1st and 2nd year at uni then when it came to my final year and revising for my big final exams I hardly went out at all because I made the decision that I wanted a really good grade for my degree and that without putting in the work I wasn’t going to get it…. luckily I knuckled down and got the grade I wanted! 😀
Going to university is a brilliant experience not just for learning but also for the people you meet and the things that you can do. The best thing is to embrace it all in moderation!
